Description
The Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program is based on mindfulness meditation: tuning into the breath, and learning to experience life more fully as it unfolds moment by moment. This is an 8 week course. It includes instruction the body scan, hatha yoga, sitting meditation, walking meditation, eating meditation, as well as mindfulness of interpersonal communication and other activities of daily life. This course is modeled on the nationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. There are two goals of this course: to develop a daily meditation practice in order to more effectively handle academic, professional and personal stress; and to explore mindfulness meditation as a health care modality. The required text Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is available at the Yale Medical Co-op on York Street. A set of two required cassette tapes or CDs are available from the course instructor.

Note
This is an experiential course. Please make a sincere commitment to attend all class sessions and to devote 30 minutes per day, 6 days per week, to practicing the meditation techniques at home. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring to the first class a foam pad or blanket and $5.30 (check or cash) for the first cassette tape ($7.95 for CD).

About the Instructor
Instructor Beth Roth, MSN, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this program. She is a bilingual nurse practitioner with many years’ experience as a health care provider and meditation instructor. She teaches meditation to patients with chronic and life-threatening illness and is a meditation consultant to hospitals, health centers, schools and other organizations throughout Connecticut.
