Mindfulness Meditation Workshops, Conference Presentations, and Staff Development

Mindfulness meditation presentations can be individually designed to meet the needs of any group, and can be delivered in English or Spanish. These highly experiential, introductory presentations are offered throughout Connecticut to students and teachers at schools and universities, to employees at businesses and corporations, to professional and support staff at health centers, hospitals, social service agencies and other organizations, and at conferences for health care and mental health providers, social workers, and the general public. These presentations last from one or two hours to a full day, depending on the setting, the participants, and the format. The primary focus of these workshops is the use of mindfulness meditation practices such as awareness of breathing and body sensation as effective stress reduction techniques. For health care and social service providers, the presentation may also include the use of lovingkindness and compassion meditation practices as a remedy for job-related stress and professional burnout. For health care professionals, a summary of research on mindfulness-based stress reduction as a behavioral medicine intervention can also be included. Mindfulness meditation workshops have been offered in the Greater New Haven area at Yale University, Yale School of Nursing, Yale Medical School, Yale Divinity School, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Hospital of St. Raphael, The Yale Health Plan, Quinnipiac University, Cold Spring School, Clifford Beers Child Guidance Clinic, and The Hispanic Mental Health Clinic. In other areas of Connecticut presentations have been given at Middlesex Hospital, The Community Health Center of Middletown, The Connecticut Regional Education Center in Hartford, The Connecticut Department of Public Health, The American Heart Association, The March of Dimes, The Connecticut Nurses' Association, and other agencies. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programs at the Community Health Center

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program at the Community Health Center (CHC) is an eight-week educational course that offers intensive training in mindfulness meditation: tuning into the breath, and learning to experience life more fully as it unfolds moment by moment. The MBSR program provides participants with instruction and support to establish a daily home meditation practice, in order to cope more effectively with stress, pain, illness, and other difficulties of life. It includes instruction in the body scan, hatha yoga, awareness of breathing meditation, walking meditation, eating meditation, as well as mindfulness of interpersonal communication and other activities of daily life. Participants should make a sincere commitment to attend class sessions and devote 30 minutes per day to practicing the meditation techniques at home with the assistance of audiocassette tapes. This program is modeled on the internationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. Additional information on the MBSR Program at CHC can be found on the CHC website.

Individual Teacher-Student Meetings

Individual meetings can be arranged with meditation instructor Beth Roth. A meeting lasts approximately one half hour. The purpose is to discuss specific questions or concerns that have arisen in a student’s meditation practice, and to address the relevance and application of meditation practice to the circumstances and events of one’s life. There is no set fee for an individual meeting. Meetings are conducted on a dana or donation basis. The suggested donation for a half-hour meeting is $20, although greater and lesser amounts are gratefully accepted. A trade-for-service exchange is another donation option. Day and evening hours are available. To schedule an individual meeting, contact me.
